"If you don’t know how much energy your buildings are using or what level of emissions they are generating it’s really hard to know how much you need to do to get to net zero or where to even start".

I couldn't have put it better myself, and it builds on my recent written response to the editor of Property Week (Progress on energy use is essential). As the BPF blog goes on to say:  "This is an area where the government may need to step in with some appropriate regulation".

Yet the blog goes on to make a valid point. Even if the industry can "crack the data nut", is the pace of technological innovation a limiting factor on the road to net zero?

It is now almost seven years ago since, in interview, I pitched the idea that the industry was set to see two areas of transformation: (1) a focus on "green" and (2) proptech.  Arguably, the latter hasn't quite lived up to the expectation, and the BPF blog explores some of the challenges that are unique to technological investment in this sector. Yet now, more than ever, the two surely go hand-in-hand - it is reassuring to see that the BPF are confronting the challenge.
