It is now unlawful to let a domestic property that has an F or G rated EPC rating, unless an exemption applies. However, what about enforcement by local authorities? I haven’t heard of any. Equally, what about industry awareness of the regulations in an industry that spans from your single individual landlord to institutional bodies? Arguably, still very limited, despite that the prohibition has been in play already for over a year (together with the threat of financial and reputational penalties).

However various local authorities now have a little more fire power, having secured grant funding. So we can expect to see enforcement activity pick up, and just as importantly, awareness. As a general observation, the government clearly recognises that successful enforcement is necessary for MEES to achieve its full potential. Perhaps this is a taster of more to come e.g. increased funding of enforcement in the non-domestic sector?
